Have a Spooky Sunday

Now that Halloween weekend is here (and since the big day falls on a Sunday this year), VIM thought we'd provide you with our top picks of the holiday's classics to watch with friends once that pesky homework is out of the way. Check 'em out below [in no particular order].

1. Halloween
Halloween is perhaps the freakiest horror film of its time and one of the best examples of the genre. Not necessarily for the faint of heart.

2. Hocus Pocus
Do we really have to explain why Hocus Pocus just plain rocks?

3. Nightmare on Elm Street
If being killed by the man inside your dreams doesn't scare you even a little bit, we don't know what will. This classic tale about Freddy Krueger has both 80s and modern versions available for rent, each of which are equally scary. Plus, the 80s version was one of Johnny Depp's first films, so it's worth it for that reason alone. Definitely check out Nightmare on Elm Street.

4. Casper
"You know that tingly feeling you get when your foot falls asleep? I think I'm made of that..." claims Casper the friendly ghost in this Steven Spielberg-produced Halloween masterpiece.

5. Sleepaway Camp
We don't even know where to begin with Sleepaway Camp. Perhaps one of the most underrated, strangest horror films of all time. The boundaries that this film both crosses and brings to light are just out there enough to provide entertainment on their own. You'll never think of summer camp in the same way.

6. Scream
Scream made the list in part because it was a new sensation while we were growing up and in part because the newest installment (Scream 4) was filmed in Michigan.

Happy Screaming!

Save or Splurge: Shearling Jackets

When thinking of autumn and winter weather, coats and warmth is all my mind wanders about. As this season develops one thing is proven, fur is out and shearling is in. From the runways of Burberry Prorsum, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Mulberry, and ACNE, shearling bombers are the way to stay warm this winter season. Although the majority of these jackets come with a heavy price tag, there are many affordable and attainable options on the market (for both men and women). So cozy up and get out and enjoy what these beautiful seasons have to offer, in style of course.

Album Review: Speak Now

To start with the obvious (/what everybody already knows), Taylor Swift's third album Speak Now is extremely personal. And we are loving every second of it. The young star's status is continuously on the rise as she sweeps up award after award, dates A-list Hollywood men and wins the hearts of the world with her genuine personality, so it's kind of impossible to ignore her, making it all the more interesting to have her pour her heart out to us in such an obvious manor. Not to mention, our favorite track off her sophomore album was "Forever & Always," which just so happened to also be a personal angst against former flame Joe Jonas. Another Joe Jonas song creeps up on this album in "The Story of Us." Along with the same story comes a track we believe is about Jonas' next conquest Camilla Belle that goes "She's not a saint and she's not what you think/She's an actress/Whoa/She's better known for the things that she does on the mattress/Whoa." Throughout the album Swift opens up about major events in her life up to this point, including songs about Taylor Lautner ("Back to December"), a bully ("Mean"), Kanye West ("Innocent") and John Mayer ("Dear John"). All in all, the album is pretty great. We're not quite sure that we feel it tops Fearless, but only time will tell (through both sales and the fact that sometimes songs just have to grow on you).
Most notable tracks: "Dear John," "Better Than Revenge"

"Spartans, What is Your Profession?!"

These are oft uttered words on the Michigan State University campus, as many of us Spartans know. This Homecoming they meant a little bit more.

The 300 star himself, Gerard Butler, who plays King Leonidas in the flick, visited MSU's campus and made an appearance not only on the football field, but at this year's Midnight Madness for the 2010 NCAA Men's Basketball season kickoff AND on the local bar and restaurant scene.

Above is a photo of the actor on the sidelines before he spoke those five powerful words at today's game. Athletic Director Mark Hollis claims the Scottish actor declared today "one of the greatest days in his life."

On another note, congratulations to the Spartans on their first 7-0 streak since 1966. Go Green! We hope everyone had a safe and happy homecoming.

Fashion Spotlight: Former U-M Quarterback Tom Brady

After losing a bet with former MSU quarterback, and current New England Patriots backup, Brian Hoyer, Tom Brady was forced to wear Spartan green during press interviews earlier this week.

Naturally, we thought it only appropriate to show off his exquisite style.

"One Less Lonely Girl" Nail Preview

If you just so happen to follow us on Twitter or Facebook then you already know about this new Nicole by OPI line inspired by none other than Justin Bieber himself. Above is a preview of the colors you can expect when the line hits stores this winter.

Bow Down, Big Sister

The above-referenced YouTube video was created by MSU student Brianna Gardner in response to a U-M fan's "Bow Down Little Brother" (which had been created before the Spartans, for the third year in a row, beat the Wolverines). Since its posting, Gardner's vid has already received tons of views on the viral video network, and we can definitely see why. Check it out below.

Movie Review: The Social Network

The Social Network is quickly creating a film-world frenzy with rave reviews accumulating from all directions. We definitely understand why. The film is swarming with fresh talent that includes director David Fincher (Fight Club), screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (TV's The West Wing) and actors Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland), Justin Timberlake (Alpha Dog) and Andrew Garfield (Never Let Me Go). As college students, we couldn't wait to see this movie simply because it is so relevant to our generation. Further, many of us do not know much about the man behind our daily obsession, so win No. 1: relevance. Beyond that, everything about this movie works. The direction is fabulous. The screenplay is stunning. The acting is fantastic. The score is beautiful. The main character, Mark Zuckerberg, a 20-something genius and the youngest billionaire in the world, is fascinating. You will be hooked.
Best on-screen moment: Any scene with Zuckerberg (Eisenberg) because his banter was on-the-dot brilliance.

Album Review: Record Collection

Mark Ronson's newest release, Record Collection, follows in much the same vein as the DJ/producer is known for (he's worked with artists Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen), that is: collaborations. And pretty amazing collaborations at that. For example, Phantom Planet's Alex Greenwald sings with rapper Ghostface Killah on "Lose It (In the End)"... kind of epic. Record has a very 1980s synth pop feel to it and we have no complaints to that effect. Overall this is a very entertaining disc, especially with lyrics like "My momma tells me I should stop/Go and get a real job... Gonna ride my bike until I get home" ("The Bike Song"). If you're a fan of old-school hip-hop similar to songs like "Bust a Move" by Young MC, then this is right up your alley. By the way, it needs to be said that the album cover is killer!
Most notable tracks: "Bang Bang Bang," "Somebody to Love Me"
