LOOKS FOR LESS

High-tops Aren't Just for Kids Anymore!

Okay, let’s face it: the new synonym for college is broke. Broke as a JOKE. So as we all venture on this 4 year (or probably longer because let’s face it we aren’t all going to strike it rich anytime soon...or at least I won’t be!) journey of just barely getting by and “making it work”, I’ve decided to step in and try to make things as easy as possible on everyone’s wallet! Here I’ll share with you the DIY’s and looks for less that I deem necessary for survival in this struggle I like to call “life”.

So to make it clear, I am all for saving whenever I can and spending as little as possible on everything I buy. I’ve become quite the savvy shopper and ebay-er and I look for a deal even when there usually isn’t one. So, I am happy to present to you all a flurry of DIY’s that are actually worth your time and many a look for less so we are all able to be just as stylish as when we didn’t actually have real bills to pay.

The Look: Olivia Palermo , street-style

For Less:

Since I work at Forever 21, I'm usually pretty up to date on the stock we receive, what we get a lot of and what sells out fast. So, naturally, this is the store I turn to first when I'm shopping because it's convenient and affordable. So just to start out, most of this outfit is from Forever 21, but I'll try to focus on a different store for each outfit.

So, it is my pleasure to present this lovely look to you, the complete package, the whole she-bang, for under $150!

1. Forever 21 Cropped Knit Blazer, $29.80 in Navy

2. Forever 21 Oversize V-Neck Tee, $9.80 in Cream

3. Forever 21 Cuffed Cotton Capri w/ Belt, $22.80 in Light Olive

4. Forever 21 Contrast High Top Sneakers, $14.50 in Navy

5. Forever 21 Anchor Chain Bracelet, $10.80 in Gold

6. Aldo "Teem" Tote, $55.00 in Cognac

Your Total Cost: $142.70

Olivia’s Cost for her Hermes Birkin Bag at the discounted OUTLET price: still $589 (with the regular price ranging anywhere from $9,000 - $150,000 according to the materials used).

Fashion Meets Beauty

Breaking beauty news! Drugstore brand Sally Hansen is teaming up with fashion designer Alexander Wang in a collection of nail lacquers just in time for his Spring 2012 show. Debuting on the runway this September, the polish line is the first beauty venture for the fashion house. Our color prediction? A muted grey reminiscent of his punky-chic studded bags.

Fall Military Trends

Military inspired pieces are all the rage right now! Grab a pair of combat boots like these for $30 from Target to rock this trend. They look remarkably like Steve Madden?s version and cost $70 less. A fresher take would be to wear a cargo jacket instead of last fall?s skinny cargo pants. For a night out, heeled combat boots are an option. Look to celebrities like Jessica Alba and Rachel Bilson for inspiration.

The It Girl

The movie theater lately seems to be full of a bright redhead named Emma Stone. Hollywood's newest It girl, is starring in two of this summer's biggest movies, "Crazy Stupid Love" and "The Help." Plus, she makes a hilarious cameo in another summer blockbuster, "Friends With Benefits." Emma's charm has also followed her onto the red carpet, stunning in pieces by Tom Ford, Giambattista Valli and Chanel. Her style choices are chic and modern, showing everyone that the good girl can get get it all. With more big movie roles (like the new Spider-man movie), magazine covers (she's Teen Vogue's cover girl this month) and fashionable appearances, it's obvious Emma will be Hollywood's darling for a very long time.

Reveal Your Inner Kitchen Beautician

Constantly investing in new beauty treatments can be a strain on a collegiate budget. Ensure that you remain ravishing with these homemade alternatives—all found within your kitchen. So go ahead, treat yourself to a spa-like day of pampering with natural ingredients: hold the chemicals, please!

Face exfoliant: blend two tablespoons each of plain yogurt and ground oats with one teaspoon each of brown sugar and lemon juice. Apply the paste to a damp face and let it soak in for at least twenty minutes. Rinse and reveal a moisturized visage!

Lip scrub: combine a teaspoon of honey, extra virgin olive oil, and brown sugar. Rub a hearty amount on the surface of lips to moisturize, exfoliate, and help prevent peeling and flaking. A perfectly smooth pout will result.

Hair reviver: mash a banana and avocado together into a purée and apply as a paste to hair. Allow the mixture to soak into your locks for fifteen minutes before rinsing out. Shampoo and condition as normal afterwards. The result will be shiny, soft hair to replace dry, tired tresses.

Teeth whitener: crush a strawberry until it is reduced to a pulp and mix with equal parts baking soda. Use a toothbrush to spread the mixture onto teeth and let sit for five minutes. Rinse away the residue with toothpaste and a good brushing. While it’s no replacement to teeth bleaching, it is a cheap, fast way to effectively remove stains from wine, coffee, and dark soda. Shine on, smiles.

Happy mixing… you kitchen chemists, you!

A Fashionable Friendship

Who knew arts and crafts could be so on trend? Celebrities like Lauren Conrad (pictured), Miley Cyrus and Nicole Richie have all been spotted with their wrists full of braided friendship bracelets. This childhood craft looks great with different colored bracelets stacked high, with different textures and beads. Plus, with National Friendship Day on Aug 8th, what couldn't be better than making your best friend a heartfelt and fashionable accessory? Here's how to:

1) Head to your local craft store first to pick up waxed thread, rope, colorful ribbons, yarn or string. Also, remember to get securing materials like glue and clasps, and beads and rhinestones for embellishments.

2) Begin to braid! Choose three pieces of string, dying a secure knot at the top and braid the bracelet an appropriate length for the wrist. You can try different braid patterns such as the candy stripe, chevron weave, or corkscrew method. After cutting string, knot ends or string beads on before tying the loose ends. Now time to share with the friends who are always so chic, and always there for you.

Designer Deals

Get name-brand items for less on sites such as Ideeli, Beyond the Rack and Gilt. Each site offers deals on specific brands for a short period of time. When shopping on sites like these, it?s important to remember that if you see something you like, buy it right away, because items sell out very fast. Another tip when shopping on sites like these is to visit them every few days because the inventory changes. Gilt has been featured on the CW?s, Gossip Girl, and features high-end designers like Helmut Lang and Charlotte Ronson. Beyond the Rack and Ideeli are priced lower but still offer great deals on brands like Joe?s Jeans and French Connection.

Bright Young Thing

With summer coming to a close soon, these last few weeks are for wearing your summer best and showing off those golden tans. An awesome trend to try is mixing neutrals and neons. To achieve this trend, try wearing summer whites and neutrals paired with neon lips, nails or accessories. Jil Sander's Spring 2011 Collection is a perfect example of this trend. By pairing a simple white tee with a neon skirt, this chic, minimalist trend is achieved. Kim Kardashian also shows off the trend by pairing classic white jeans, nude heels and a tan shirt with a great neon yellow Hermes Birkin bag. Some great pieces to invest in are Cambridge Satchel Company's Neon Satchel ($128, urbanoutfitters.com), Splendid's Nude and Pink Striped Tee ($81, net-a-porter.com), Zara's Neon Heels ($100) and Nars "Schiap Shocking Pink" Nailpolish ($17, narscosmetics.com) Bonus? The neturals and neons BOTH help to make your summer glow pop even more.

VIM Trend Watch: Suspenders

Rock the menswear trend seen on celebrities such as Taylor Momsen and Victoria Beckham (pictured) by wearing suspenders this summer. Forever 21 has their own $20 version of this look (Added bonus: The suspenders are detachable). If you?re skeptical about trying this trend, wear a top that matches your suspenders or one that?s close to it, to make them less obvious. If you?re willing to take the plunge, wear a tie with your suspenders, a lá Diane Kruger. Suspenders don?t have to be worn with just shorts. They can be worn with skirts, high-waisted shorts or pants. Remember to add a feminine touch to keep the suspenders from looking too masculine. Last but not least, remember to be confident and own your look!

It’s quite a price tag for magnets, but just might be a trend worth investing in.

Ombré Obsession

By now we’ve all seen the ombré hair trend, with celebrities such as Lauren Conrad
and Sarah Jessica Parker sporting two–tone highlights that go on dark at the roots and
progressively get lighter and brighter toward the tips. Well, now the ombré craze has
spread to manicures—meaning each nail is painted a different shade to create a gradient
that gradually fades from dark to light. To achieve this look, choose five different
polishes from the same color family that show a soft progression from one tone to the
next (so that your ombré manicure looks intentional). Paint the darkest shade on your
thumbnail and finish with the lightest on your pinky finger. Check out LC’s versions of
the ombré manicure in shades of red and blue to help you decided which color palette

Hair Trend Alert: Rainbow-Tipped Tresses

Goodbye feathers, hello rainbow tips! Although rainbow-colored hair may conjure up images of the consistently eccentric Nicki Minaj and the like, the bright plunge may now be more attainable for those looking to spice things up without going overboard. Lauren Conrad, the always classy and captivating fashionista, tweeted pictures last week of the tips of her famous sandy blonde locks tinted blue, purple, and pink. The colors are slightly paler than traditionally seen in non-natural hair colors and gradually intensify and brighten by the end of the strand, creating a unique tie-dye look.

For those questioning if a non-celebrity can get away with such a vibrant look, Lauren’s color-kissed tips are only a few inches long and can be easily hidden in a bun. We love this playful look for summer—consider testing it out if your summer is being spent in a locale where an unorthodox hair color would be acceptable. If your jaunt with colorful tips goes awry, remember you can always dye it back or trim off the tie-dyed ends!

Royally Chic

Last week, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Catherine, arrived in North America for their tour of Canada and Los Angeles. Of course, we couldn't keep our eyes off the new princess and her classic, chic style. In Canada, Kate honored the country by wearing a diamond Canadian maple leaf pin on her simple dresses by some of her favorite designers such as Issa and Reiss, as well as on Canada Day, wearing a fabulous red hat with maple leaves on it. Paying homage to her tour stops, Kate wore two dresses by Canadian designer Erdem and for her first night in Los Angeles, she wore an emerald silk dress by American designer Diane von Furstenburg. Her choices were elegant and effortless, choosing dresses in bright jewel shades like red, green and purple and soft neutral shades of grey, taupe and white. Her best moment? Her belted, lavender Alexander McQueen gown for the BAFTA Awards in LA. This North American tour helped us see that no matter where she is, Kate always has the perfect princess style.

Want to bring a favorite clothing piece of Kate's home with you? Kate was seen wearing J Brand's "811" mid-rise skinny leg jeans ($169, jbrandjeans.com) three days in a row in Canada!

Pool-proof your look!

Water, humidity, and heat have a knack for spoiling a perfectly made-up face. This summer, resist the cruelty of the weather and its unappealing side effects by relying on waterproof makeup.

FACE: A natural, fresh-faced look is most desirable in the summer to avoid appearing overly dolled-up. No one strives to be seen stepping out of the water with foundation streaking down their face. Lancôme’s Effacernes is a waterproof undereye concealer that stays on all day, evens skintones, and covers uninvited dark circles. (Sephora, $28)

EYES: Stila's Smudge Stick eyeliners are both waterproof and smudge proof to help you endure a long day in the heat. While waterproof eyeliners commonly tug at the eyelids, Stila’s seven shades glide on easily to deliver intense color with staying power (Sephora, $20). Consider pairing lined eyes with Yves Saint Laurent's Singular Nuit Blanche waterproof mascara. The unique wand allows for volume, definition, and length that prevails in water and heat (macys.com, $36).

REMOVER: At the end of the day, washing away the makeup that resists it all can be a grueling task. Benefit’s Remove It is a lightweight, oil-free solution for cleansing your face of the makeup that accentuates your natural allure all day (Sephora, $20).

Red, White & Blue Beauty

Whether you're at the beach, a BBQ or the firework displays, here are some easy ways to add a little Fourth of July spirit to your beauty routine this holiday weekend.

Eyes — To make your beach tan really show, try a shimmery white shadow in the inner corner of your eyes. Try NARS Shimmer Eyeshadow in Tibet ($23, barneys.com) Or for an extra holiday touch, try a little blue mascara on the tips of lashes with Urban Decay's Big Fatty Mascara in Indigo ($17, sephora.com)

Lips — Nothing says Fourth of July more than a bold red lip. Perfect for a quick from-beach-to-party touch-up, swipe on M.A.C.'s Russian Red Lipstick ($15, maccosmetics.com)

Nails — For a subtle patriotic nod, try Sephora by OPI Glee Chic Print Nail Patches ($15, sephora.com). These navy and white polka dot nail strips, inspired by the FOX show, easily apply with varying lengths for a perfect fit. To match the fireworks that night, swipe on a coat of Deborah Lippmann's Glitter Nail Polish in Lady Sings the Blues ($18, nordstrom.com).

Hair — Finally, if you're feeling really bold, dye small streaks of varying colors of blue similar to Ashley Olsen's new 'do . If dying your hair seems too risky, try clip in extensions for the day!

To the Maxi!

Hemlines have gone down this summer as the temperature increases. We are loving the maxi trend which includes skirts, dresses or the most recent: sheer-skirt-over-shorts look.

A trend spotted on the red carpet and on fashionistas in East Lansing alike, these skirts will make you standout in a crowd when everyone else is wearing regular shorts! If you're looking for a way to add some bohemian flare to your wardrobe, this is the perfect summer trend to try.

Tip: If you get bored with the length of the hemline, tie one side in a knot near your knee for a new look!

Salute your style with stripes

In honor of the fast approaching Fourth of July weekend, we offer some tips on how to celebrate the pizzazz of America through stylish picks. These subtle hints of striped patriotism will allow you to showcase your nautical side—without being fully outfitted in stars and stripes.

Although horizontal stripes are often feared and deemed unflattering, they are a great way to embrace a crisp, nautical look. Pair a navy and white striped top ($49, J.Crew) with skinny jeans or white shorts and you’ll be set to sail. A striped bikini ($60, J.Crew) is also sure to be at home on a yacht.

If you’re more comfortable dabbling with striped accessories, consider adding striped wedges ($60, heels.com) or a straw hat to complement your outfit ($85, stylebop.com). Oceanic inspired jewelry (brooch: $23, amazon.com) is also a great way to add a seasonal touch to your apparel. Happy sailing!

Suit Up!

Summer is officially in full swing, and while many of us (myself included) have been avoiding bathing suit shopping like the plague, swim season has inevitably crept up on us yet again. Here's the good news: this year's swimsuit trends offer several flattering alternatives to the itsy-bitsy string bikinis we're so used to seeing. Dive into one of these stylish suits, and we promise everyone will be too busy praising your impeccable fashion sense to notice that you may not have lost those few extra pounds.

The One-Piece: We know what you're thinking: only a lifeguard would be caught poolside sporting such a frumpy frock. Well, think again. This season's one-pieces are a far cry from the red Speedo, allowing you to show a little skin while avoiding any wardrobe malfunctions. Try a sexy deep-v halter or backless suit for just the right amount of coverage, or opt for strapless and tank styles in fun prints (which can double as tops!).

The Monokini: With their strategically placed cut-outs and sexy straps, these suits may even be hotter than those barely-there bikinis. Keyholes, bondage strips and peek-a-boo cutaways emphasize your figure while still leaving a little to the imagination. Try one of these unique suits if you're looking to grab some attention without letting it all hang out- we guarantee you'll stand out in a crowd full of bikinis.

The Retro Two-Piece: Making quite a comeback from the 1950s, these high-waisted bikinis are pinup-girl chic with a modern twist. The bottoms hit at the smallest part of your waist, making you look thinner while still baring a little midriff. Glam up this vintage-inspired suit with red lips and gold jewelry- so Marilyn Monroe-esque!

Summer Trend: The Floppy Sun Hat

It is not often you find a trend that can be appropriately worn by both you and your grand mother. But behold this summer, you can! The Voice

When this show premiered at the end of April, it took the reality TV world by storm. Four famous musicians (Adam Levine, Cee-Lo Green, Christina Aguiliera and Blake Shelton) compete against each other by finding teams of talented new singers. The show began with the blind auditions where the judges faced their backs to the singers and picked their team on just "the voice." Now, this Tuesday on NBC at 9 pm, after weeks of competition, the final four singers are left to perform and the winner will be crowned Wednesday at 8 pm. If you haven't heard any of the singers yet, heres a video of one of my favorites Dia Frampton from Team Blake singing "Heartless" by Kayne West.

Your Hair vs. The Summer

Summer can be a trying time for preserving well-tamed hair. The recurrent harsh elements of summer such as UV rays, chlorine, and humidity can easily damage and weaken your locks. These products will help preserve color and moisture, despite the elements.

Oscar Blandi At Home Salon Glaze: This glaze prolongs the life of color treated hair and brightens natural hair color. While the olive oil and macadamia oil boost silkiness and shine, the glaze also contains sun inhibitors and antioxidants to protect hair from the negative effects of the environment. It can be used daily, mixed in with your conditioner to boost shine, or can be used weekly as a three minute treatment. (Sephora, $25)

Bumble and bumble Quenching Complex: Bumble and bumble’s trendy brand encourages users to mix their vast array of products and find what works best based on their hair type and needs. Their Quenching Complex is a must-have for preserving soft, shiny hair of all types. This leave-in conditioner/detangler provides protection, moisture, and replenishment for overworked or dry hair suffering from heat styling or the environment and can be applied daily. (amazon.com, $25)

Oscar Blandi Pronto Colore Root Touch-Up and Highlighting Pen: Those who opt for coloring their locks know that re-coloring too frequently is another source of damage. To fend off double the damage this summer, consider trying a root touch-up pen. There are several different versions of this concept in aerosol sprays, but this highlighting pen is more environmentally friendly and helps concentrate where you want the color. Free of ammonia and peroxide (unlike many sprays), it conditions hair with gentle nutrients while perfectly hiding roots. (Sephora, $23)

The Shatter Craze!

When Katy Perry released her collection of nail polishes with O.P.I. back in February, the black shatter polish from her collection instantly "shattered" the beauty world, selling out of stores in the first week. With the popularity of the black shatter, O.P.I. then released the silver shatter at the beginning of this summer with their "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" Collection. But now, we can all shatter our nails in five more additional shades. Along with the black and silver, O.P.I. released this month shatter polishes in white, navy, turquoise, red and blue. Apply one coat of shatter over two completely dry coats of polish and now you too can achieve this stylish textured look!

Summer Wardrobe Must-Haves

Now that the weather is finally starting to reflect the date on the
calendar, it’s time to make sure your wardrobe is set for the season!

Summer scarves: These lightweight wraps are an excellent way to add a
punch of color to any outfit. They go great with anything from
sundresses to sweaters. Many summer scarves have delicate details such
as lace and shimmer, which are most visible when paired with a less
dramatic top. ($14.99, express.com)

Sundresses: A staple to any summer-loving girl’s closet. Sundresses
are the perfect way to embrace the warm season. Dress them up with
accessories such as cardigans, jewelry, and wedges and you’ll be
dressed to impress at any event. However, sundresses can look just as
great standing alone without the embellishments for a day at the pool
or a gathering with friends. ($45, aerie.com)

Shoes: The crochet trend is on the rise this summer and can be spotted
in many variants and styles. We love the delicate look of crochet
shoes and how comfortable they are. (Rocket Dog, $40, zappos.com)

Watches: A watch is the perfect way to add character to any outfit. We
love WEwood’s environmentally friendly beige wooden watch and their
pledge to plant a tree for each watch purchased. ($119, we-wood.us)

Add your own creative touches to these ideas and you’re sure to be
well dressed this summer!
