Movie Review: Winnebago Man

A lucky handful of people had the pleasure of seeing this film long before its theatrical release, which falls on July 9. Winnebago Man hails from Austin filmmakers Ben Steinbauer, Malcolm Pullinger and Joel Heller. It's easy to see why this hilarious documentary won the Founders Award at the 5th annual Traverse City Film Festival, which happens to be where we were able to catch it last summer. The film follows Ben Steinbauer as he searches for the man behind one of the first "viral" videos ever, a 1988 outtake reel from a shoot for a Winnebago promotion. Before YouTube, the video was literally passed from person to person in VHS form. Jack Rebney is a fairly ornery old man yet extremely lovable. The search for Rebney leads to a more in-depth look at the idea of the YouTube celebrity-victim. The nearest showtime can be found on the film's official website. If you are unable to catch this gem in theaters, keep an eye peeled for the DVD release or check out the hilarity that started it all. [Note: You must be 18 or older to view the linked content.] It is definitely worth the watch!
Best on-screen moment: When Rebney contacts Steinbauer and confesses his life post-"fame" reveal as being total bulls**t... and basically every second they replay his claim to fame.
